Introduction.—In one of his discussions as to the ultimate bearing
power of pile foundations, the late E. Sherman Gould, M. Am. Soc.
C. E., stated that the theories of Goodrich had mathematically exhausted
the subject, referring, of course, to a dynamic analysis. It is
interesting, therefore, to note an entire departure from the usual procedure
in a treatment proposed by Desmond* in which he studies a
concrete pile purely by static methods.
